Scotland’s Women’s T20 World Cup hopes dashed while Ireland back to victory in Abu Dhabi

[ad_1]

Victory over the United States a day earlier saw Kathryn Bryce’s side tied for the top spot of the four teams, with the first and second-placed teams going into semi-final qualifying for next year’s South African Championship.

Poor batting performances have been costly for Scotland, who were sacked in 77 overs, and have now seen Bangladesh make clear progress at the summit ahead of Wednesday’s final group stage.

Bryce’s batting decision backfired first after they lost a slew of early wickets, with Lorna Jack the only fighting figure.

Jack’s 22, which included three boundaries, helped set up a 78 victory, but Bangladesh won by seven.

Rachel Slater scored two with 13, but Nigar Sultana’s 34 thrashed Scotland, who needed to beat Ireland to keep their World Cup hopes alive.

Elsewhere, Ireland recovered from a defeat against Bangladesh to win a T20 World Cup qualifier against the United States in Abu Dhabi.

Ireland’s starting batsmen Amy Hunt and Gaby Lewis were 6.5 overs in a nine-wicket victory after a 91-run rout.

Hunt was sacked in 43 games but Lewis remained unbeaten in 44 as Ireland sailed at home.

Earlier, Team USA went down 52-1 with four eliminations in their innings.

Capt Sindhu Sriharsha topped the scoring with 25 before being batted by Laura Delany, who dropped just six of her four at-bats, while Eimear Richardson had two shots at 19.

Two of the eight teams taking part will qualify for next year’s World Cup in South Africa.

Bangladesh remain at the top of Group A, with Ireland’s next game against Scotland on Wednesday.
