Seals, Broadway’s New York Adventure at Iga | US Open Updates | Entertainment

NEW YORK (AP) – Latest News US Open (all times are local time):

9:20pm

New York is more than just the U.S. Open.

Meet celebrities, one. Go to a Broadway show, another one.

Iga Swiatek is doing it all.

The women’s singles champion said her game was set before she lifted the trophy on Saturday. She met Singer Seal earlier in the event.

“I was like, ‘Even if I’m going to lose now, I’ve won this game because I took a picture with him,'” Swatek said.

The 21-year-old from Poland also met retired skier Lindsay Vaughan. On Sunday, she plans to see a show, but she declined to say which one.

“I won’t name the musical,” Swatek said, “because I’m hoping for a little bit of peace tomorrow.”

6:10pm

Iga Swatek defeated Ons Jabeur 6-2, 7-6 (5) to win her first US Open title and third Grand Slam title.

No. 1 Swatek added the title to her two French Open victories, including one earlier this year. She won seven titles in 2022, the most for a woman since Serena Williams in 2014.

Jabeur bounced back after two poor starts but lost in his second straight Grand Slam final.

4:50pm

Iga Swatek maintained her dominance in the final with a 6-2 victory over Anse Jaber at the US Open.

No. 1 Swatek has won in straight sets in each of his past nine finals since dropping his first career final in 2019.

One of them was a 6-2, 6-2 victory against Jabeur in Rome this year, which has been equally easy so far.

Swiatek made it 3-0 in 10 minutes, 12-2 and finished in just 30 minutes.

Fifth-seeded Jabir has lost just one match on his way to his second straight Grand Slam final.

4:20pm

Iga Swiatek and Ons Jabeur start the women’s singles final at the US Open.

There’s a lot of support for both at the New York venue. Many fans wore the red of Poland, the home country of No. 1 Swatek.

Jaber is trying to become the first African woman and first Arab to win a Grand Slam title in the professional era. The No. 5 seed from Tunisia lost in the Wimbledon final.

4 pm

Alexandra Eala has become the first Filipino player to win a junior Grand Slam singles title.

The No. 10 seed beat Czechia’s Lucia Havlickova 6-2, 6-4 to win the US Open Junior Women’s Championship.

The 17-year-old from Quezon City said she hopes her victory will inspire young players in her country.

Spain’s Martin Landaluce won the men’s championship with a 7-6 (3), 5-7, 6-2 victory over Belgium’s Gilles Arnaud Bailly.

2:15pm

US Open semifinalist Francis Tiafoe has withdrawn from Team USA, which will play in the Davis Cup group stage next week in Glasgow, Scotland.

The US Tennis Association announced that Tiafoe had withdrawn. Tiafoe, a 24-year-old from Maryland, was the No. 22 seed in Flushing Meadows.

He became the first American to reach the U.S. Open semifinals since Andy Roddick was runner-up in 2006.

Tiafoe’s game ended in a loss to No. 3 seed Carlos Alcaraz. Alcalás will meet No. 7 seed Caspar Rudd in Sunday’s U.S. Open final.

2pm

Australians Storm Sanders and John Peers won the US Open mixed doubles title with a 4-6, 6-4, 10-7 victory over the teams of Kirsten Flipkens and Edouard Roger-Vasselin.

It was Pells’ first major mixed doubles title, having made 31 appearances before pairing Sanders for the first time at the tournament. He ended the game’s tiebreaker with an ace.

Last year, Peers teamed up with former women’s No. 1 Ash Barty at the Olympics and won a bronze medal.

1:15pm

The top-ranked Iga Swatek and Anse Jaber will compete for the women’s singles title at the US Open, and will also decide the mixed doubles title.

Swatek is bidding for her second Grand Slam title and third championship of the year. The 21-year-old from Poland won her second French Open title in June, one of her six titles in 2022.

Jabeur is fighting for her first Grand Slam title, losing in the Wimbledon final. The No. 5 seed from Tunisia will become the first African woman to win a Grand Slam in the professional era that began in 1968.

Their match at Arthur Ashe Stadium followed the mixed doubles final between Australians Storm Sanders and John Peers and Kirsten Flipkens and Edouard Roger-Vasselin.
