Following the launch of Mena’s 50 Best Restaurants in Abu Dhabi earlier this year, sponsored by S. Pellegrino and Acqua Panna, the awards plan to return to the city for a second edition in January 2023.
The event will be organised in partnership with the Department of Culture and Tourism – DCT Abu Dhabi.
Chefs, restaurateurs, media and foodies will once again gather in the UAE capital to celebrate and showcase culinary talent from across the region in a series of events from 27 January to 1 February, with the awards ceremony itself taking place at Monday, January 30.
The inaugural list of 50 Best Restaurants in the Middle East and North Africa, published in February 2022, highlights the diversity and richness of the region’s cuisine, including restaurants from 14 cities, with Dubai-owned independently owned 3 Fils awarded the coveted Middle East and the title of Best Restaurant in North Africa.

Highlights of the Abu Dhabi program will include the Thought Leadership Forum #50BestTalks and a wide-ranging series of 50 Best Signature sessions: collaborative dining events featuring top chefs from around the world as well as the best regional talent.
Chefs at the 50 Best Signature Sessions include Massimiliano Alajmo (No. 10 in the World’s 50 Best Restaurants 2022) at legendary restaurant Le Calandre in Rubano, Italy, Hiroyasu Kawate (No. 30 in the World) at the famous Florilège restaurant in Tokyo Best Restaurant), rising star Jessica Rosval of Casa Maria Luigia of Massimo Bottura in Modena, Italy, and Maira Yeo of Cloudstreet, Singapore have been named Asia’s Best Pastry Chef 2022. More culinary stars from the rest of the MENA region will also be in the series.
Each visiting chef will collaborate with local culinary talent to create a unique one-off dining experience for Abu Dhabi residents and visitors. Major events throughout the programme will be open to food-loving consumers on a ticketed basis, with more details to be announced in due course.
Three special awards will be announced ahead of the live show, including Best Female Chef in the Middle East and North Africa on December 7, Icon on January 4 and the American Express Worth of Attention Award on January 18.
voting process
The list is compiled by Mena’s 50 Best Restaurant Academy, an influential group of 250 key leaders in the restaurant industry in the region, each based on their expert opinion of the MENA restaurant scene make an election. The college is divided into six regions: Gulf; Saudi Arabia; Levantine; Israel, North Africa (East) and North Africa (West).
Each district has its own group of members, including a chairperson, called the academy chairperson, who leads it. The group is made up of food writers and critics, chefs, restaurateurs and highly regarded foodies. For the 2023 list, each Mena Academy member voted for up to seven restaurants, at least two of which are located outside their country. None of the event’s sponsors had any influence on the voting process. – arab trade news agency
