ROANOK, Va. (WDBJ) — The book “Secret Garden” has helped generations of readers learn how to deal with loss through the eyes of Mary Lennox.Now it is made by Virginia Children’s Theater October 7-8.
“It’s a story about life. It’s a story about the cycle of life. It’s love. It’s loss. It’s grief, and it’s inspiration. It’s all the things we experience every day,” said Brett, artistic director of production at Virginia Children’s Theater. Roden said.
Virginia Children’s Theater veteran Campbell Duff brings Mary’s character to life on stage.
“Mary is this young girl. I believe in the book, she’s 10. She lives in India and her parents died of cholera, so she had to move in with her uncle Archibald,” Duff said.
From there, she met other family members while dealing with her grief.
Duff said she took a deep look at herself in preparation for the emotional role.
“Her parents passed away. It’s something I’ve never dealt with, and it’s hard. Losing is really hard. So coming out of the grief that I’ve been through in my life is very powerful on stage. ,” Duff said.
For director Liz Piccoli, there were some challenges in bringing beloved children’s stories to live theater.
“Trying to get the actor into perception, well, I’m the flower. I’m the wind. I’m all these natural elements. I think it’s a challenge, but it’s also a wonderful creative challenge. Switching to that magical reality. Every time Made me shudder,” Piccoli said.
The audience shuddered to see this timeless story against the backdrop of a beautiful set and live orchestra.
“Come on with an open mind. And look at the show as a whole. Look at every character and every single actor on the show is amazing,” Duff said.
