Senior health official says China’s population is ageing rapidly | World News

[ad_1]

By 2025, China will become a “moderately aging” country with a population of more than 300 million over the age of 60, and by 2035, the population of 60 and over will reach 400 million, accounting for 30% of the total population, becoming a “severely aging” country nation. Senior health officials said Tuesday.

Wang Haidong, director of the National Health Commission’s Department of Aging, said that by the end of 2021, my country’s elderly population aged 60 and above will exceed 267 million, accounting for 18.9% of the total population. Tuesday’s press conference.

By 2025, this number will reach 300 million, or about 20% of the total population.

That number will peak in 2050, Wang said.

“my country has a large elderly population and the population is aging rapidly,” the news website The Paper quoted Wang Yi at a news conference.

Census data shows that China’s population will be 1.4 billion in 2021.

The Chinese government is grappling with a declining and ageing population, changing its decades-old one-child policy to three last year in a bid to stem the decline in birth rates and avert a looming demographic crisis.

Given that China’s average life expectancy now stands at 78.2 years, the number of elderly people is increasing, according to the latest figures released by the National Health Commission in July.

Experts say an increase in the number of elderly people and a decline in the working-age population will seriously affect the economy in the coming years.

As China’s elderly population continues to rise and the population ages, Wang said, “the sustainable development of public service provision and the social security system” will face challenges.

With the incidence of degenerative diseases in the elderly, national health care costs and lost productivity will also increase.

Alzheimer’s disease has become the most common dementia among the elderly in China, Wang said.

“There are about 15 million dementia patients aged 60 and over in the country, of which 10 million are Alzheimer’s patients,” Wang said.

Wang added that there are more elderly people in rural areas than in urban agglomerations.

Citing data collected in 2020 from 10 provincial-level regions in northeastern and southwestern China, Wang said more than 20 percent of the population was over the age of 60.

Earlier this month, an official report said Beijing had also entered a “moderately aging society from 2021”.

“As of the end of last year, Beijing had more than 4.4 million permanent residents aged 60 and above, accounting for more than one-fifth of the total population,” said a report jointly prepared by the Beijing Municipal Government Work Office. Committee on Aging and Beijing Aging Association.

The report added that there are about 3.12 million people aged 65 and over, accounting for 14.24% of the total population, an increase of 204,000 people over 2020.
