Serie A reaches TV rights deal with Abu Dhabi Media

[ad_1]

release:

Rome (Italy) (AFP) – Serie A on Thursday accepted an offer from television platform Abu Dhabi Media to broadcast the Italian league in the Middle East and North Africa after more than a year without broadcasters in the region.

The Italian league announced that over the next three seasons, Abu Dhabi Media, a public agency in the United Arab Emirates, has acquired the rights to at least $79 million (€75 million).

A Serie A spokesman told AFP that any additional revenue related to the number of subscribers Italian football would generate on the platform could be added to the guaranteed minimum.

With last year’s tender without satisfactory offers, the Italian league has developed its own Arabic Youtube channel, offering matches for free – 5 matches a day for the first half of the season, then all 10 from February.

Tenders for a new three-year cycle in the region were deemed unsuccessful last year, not least because prior rights holder beIN Sport had not made a new offer.

BeIN has criticized Serie A for its partnership with Saudi Arabia, especially in organizing the Italian Super Cup.

The Qatari group has clashed with the Saudi government, which has accused the group of supporting BeoutQ, a system that pirates sports images.

In June 2020, beIN temporarily suspended the broadcast of the Italian Championship due to the conflict.

BeIN Sports is reportedly paying around 112 million euros per season for these rights, almost 4.5 times what the new broadcaster pays.
