R Madhavan Clarifies Dhurandhar 2 Scene After FIR Over Alleged Disrespect to Sikh Religious Sentiments
Bollywood actor R. Madhavan has issued a clarification after controversy erupted over a scene in his latest film Dhurandhar 2, following an FIR filed by members of the Sikh community alleging that the film hurt religious sentiments.
The issue began when a scene from the film went viral on social media, showing Madhavan’s character in a sequence that some viewers believed depicted him smoking while sacred Sikh verses were being recited in the background. The scene sparked strong reactions, with community members calling it disrespectful to Sikh religious beliefs and traditions.
A complaint was subsequently filed at Mumbai’s Mulund police station by Sikh community representatives, including a leader of a local organisation. The complainant alleged that the scene disrespected Gurbani and the teachings of Guru Gobind Singh, particularly because tobacco use is strictly prohibited in Sikhism. The FIR has drawn attention to the sensitive intersection of artistic expression and religious sentiments.
Responding to the backlash, Madhavan took to social media to clarify the intent behind the scene and address the concerns raised. In a video message, the actor stated that there had been a misunderstanding and insisted that no disrespect was intended toward the Sikh community or its religious values.
He explained that, as per the director’s instructions, he had extinguished the cigarette well before delivering the lines associated with the sacred text. According to Madhavan, the scene was carefully designed to ensure that neither smoking nor any visual of a cigarette appeared while the Gurbani lines were being recited. He emphasized that the final cut of the film was edited to maintain this separation.
The actor further emphasized that the team behind the film holds deep respect for all religions, including Sikhism. He expressed regret that the sequence was perceived differently by some viewers and reiterated that hurting sentiments was never the intention. Madhavan also thanked audiences for their support while appealing for understanding amid the controversy. He noted that the film’s creative team had consulted with cultural advisors during production to ensure sensitivity.
The film, directed by Aditya Dhar, has otherwise been performing strongly at the box office and features a star-studded cast including Ranveer Singh, Sanjay Dutt, and Arjun Rampal. However, the controversy has brought unwanted attention at a time when the movie is enjoying commercial success. The film, which released on March 19, had already been generating buzz for its nearly four-hour runtime and action-packed narrative.
The Sikh community’s objection is rooted in religious principles that prohibit the consumption of tobacco and emphasize the sanctity of Gurbani. Critics argue that combining such imagery—even unintentionally—with sacred verses can be seen as insensitive and offensive. As a result, calls have been made for the filmmakers to either remove or modify the disputed scene and issue a formal apology. Community leaders have also demanded that the filmmakers meet with representatives to resolve the matter amicably.
This is not the first time a Bollywood film has faced backlash over religious sensitivities. In recent years, several films have come under scrutiny for their portrayal of cultural and religious elements, prompting filmmakers to be more cautious in their storytelling. The industry has often walked a fine line between creative freedom and respecting religious sentiments, with such controversies frequently impacting box office performance.
Despite the controversy, Madhavan’s clarification appears to be an attempt to de-escalate tensions and provide context to the scene. Whether this explanation will satisfy those who have raised objections remains to be seen, as discussions around the issue continue both online and offline. Legal proceedings related to the FIR are also ongoing, and the filmmakers may face further scrutiny if the matter proceeds.

In summary, Dhurandhar 2 has found itself at the center of a religious controversy due to a misunderstood scene involving sacred Sikh verses. While an FIR has been filed and objections have been raised, Madhavan has firmly denied any intent to offend, stating that the portrayal was handled with sensitivity and respect. As the controversy unfolds, it serves as a reminder of the challenges filmmakers face in balancing creative expression with the diverse religious and cultural sensitivities of Indian audiences.
