‘Our community is in shock. Nothing like this has happened in 30 years of service’
The plane crashed about 50 kilometers from the city of Foggia in the southeastern Puglia region, killing all seven people on board.
While the weather conditions were reported to be “bad,” a spokeswoman for the Foggia police station said the cause of the accident remained unclear.
The spokesman added that police were still trying to get to the scene and the nationality of the victim was not known.
However, several Italian newspapers reported that four of the victims were tourists from Slovenia,
The mayor of the islands, Pepino Calabrese, told the media that local doctors decided at the last minute to take a helicopter instead of a ferry “because of poor sea conditions”.
“Our community is in shock. Nothing like this has happened in 30 years of service,” he said.
The Apulian president, who was attending a rally calling for peace in Ukraine in Rome, posted on Facebook that he had left the event for Foggia.
Michele Emiliano said on Facebook: “All 7 people in the helicopter were killed. This is a terrible time for us to feel depressed.”
