A local chief said that the fatal attack occurred in the village of Kasanzi in Beni County, North Kivu.

A local official stated that 19 civilians in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo were burned and hacked to death by Ugandan rebels.

Kakule Kalunga told AFP that 14 bodies were found on Saturday, one day after the incident.

A local chief said that the bodies were found by Red Cross staff who entered the nearby forest after being attacked in Kasandz village in Beni County, North Kivu province to search for the missing.

Despite emergency security measures taken by President Felix Tshisekedi, the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) affiliated with ISIL still launched deadly attacks. Beni is located here. The center of the region.

“[The] Nineteen people were killed by the insurgents raging on the territory of ADF Beni,” Kalenga said, adding that the victims were killed by “knife weapons and fire” and the houses were set on fire.

In a statement on Friday, Melekimulala, a spokesperson for the new civil society organization Rwenzori, expressed regret that there were no military personnel around Beni.

A regional military source contacted by Agence France-Presse did not immediately comment.

Since May, the provinces of North Kivu and Ituri have been under siege, replacing civilian authorities with the army and police to combat armed groups.

U.S. and Congolese sources said at the time that a U.S. special operations force arrived in the area earlier this month to help the Congolese army fight the ADF.

The size of the task force is unknown, but in the official photos of the meeting between Tshisekedi and the delegation led by Mike Hammer, the US ambassador to the Democratic Republic of the Congo, about a dozen soldiers can be seen.
