Art: large format photo
“Cig Harvey: From Red to Purple,” Harvey’s large-format color photography will be on view on October 13 at the Baum Gallery in the West Wing of Central Arkansas University’s McAstrand Hall, 201 Donagay Avenue, Conway. In conjunction with the exhibition, Harvey’s work will be projected on the southwest façade of UCA’s Windgate Centre for Fine and Performing Arts September 21-23 and October 11-13 from 8-10pm. Harvey will give a public talk at the Baum Gallery on October 11th from 1:40-2:30pm and on October 12th at 6:30pm in McCastlain’s Art Lecture Hall 143.
Conway Art Walk
Conway Art Walk Returning Friday, follow Oak Street from Chestnut Street to Front Street, then move to the first Friday of each month. In addition to artist booths and downtown shopping, attractions include art installations, musical performances (on the Kris Allen Stage from 7-8pm) and new gallery spaces, and an extension to Simon Park in Conway. The park will also host a pop-up home makerspace and a food truck sponsored by Conway’s Downtown Partners.access conwayartwalk.com.
Hot Springs Gallery

Paintings by Mark Blaney, paintings and sculptures by Robyn Horn, and work by painter, illustrator and graphic designer Steven Schneider feature prominently in the September exhibition Justus Art Gallery, 827A Central Ave., Hot Springs, opens Friday with a gallery walk reception from 5-9 p.m. The exhibition runs until September 31; Blaney and Schneider will be at Tea Talk, a casual gallery on Saturdays at 10am. “Creative Couple”

Known for its Banda-inspired performances, La Original Banda El Limon focuses on brass and percussion instruments and will help visitors to the Magic Springs theme and water park, East Grand Avenue (US 70), Hot Springs celebrate the park’s Spanish Culture of the Year Hispanic Heritage Day, Sunday at 7pm. Mexican singer-songwriter Galito de la Salsa opened. The concert is included with the daily park ticket – $39.99 plus tax for anyone ages 4 and older – or a season pass. Grab blankets and chairs; Sunday is also the park’s last cool Sunday of the season; guests can also bring coolers full of food and drinks, but not alcoholic beverages or glass containers. Arkansas Central Library System Banned Books Week, September 18-24, will host a writing contest, book giveaway, and film screenings highlighting Alex Gino’s book, Melissa. Previously published under the name “George,” a story of self-acceptance and friendship woven in EB White’s classic “Charlotte’s Web,” featured in the 2018, 2019, and 2020 American Library Association’s Most Challenging Top of the book list.
From September 1-14, submit the 9th Annual Banned Book Writing Contest – 250-1,000 words, typed – by mail (CALS Banned Book Writing Contest, Six Bridges, 100 Rock St., Little Rock, Ark. 72201) or e-mail: [email protected] Participants must be at least 16 years old. The winner will receive $400; there will also be a $100 honorable mention.
Gino will discuss the book, name changes, and censorship with trans health advocate Luanne Racher on September 22 at 6:30 p.m. at the Ron Robinson Theater at 100 River Market Ave. in Little Rock. Discussions will precede the 7:45pm screening of the film “Transhood” and the announcement of the winner of the writing contest. The animated film version of “Charlotte’s Web” opens in theaters on September 24 at 2 p.m.

The Old Washington Farmers Market will host a Watermelon Official Weighing Saturday around 11am, head to Great Pumpkin Commonwealth, Washington, Arkansas, behind Washington City Hall, on US Route 278 West, across the street from the historic Williams’ Tavern restaurant in Washington State Park, from the Hope Exit (Exit 30 ) to close Interstate 30. Prizes will be awarded to the top three largest watermelons – $500 for first, $300 for second, and $200 for third.
