A shark has killed an American woman snorkeling in the Bahamas, police say.

A police spokeswoman said the woman’s family saw a bull shark attack her just half a mile from her area. 21-year-old American woman killed in shark attack in 2019.

The family is on a seven-night cruise aboard Royal Caribbean’s Harmony of the Seas, which leaves Florida on Sunday.

Police said the woman suffered upper body injuries and was pulled from the water by her family and staff from the tour company.

She was taken to a hospital in New Providence, where she was pronounced dead on Tuesday, police added.

Cruise operator Royal Caribbean International said the stricken passenger had booked an independent trip in Nassau to support her family.

In 2021, there will be 73 confirmed unprovoked attacks worldwide, 9 of which were fatal.

According to experts, this is higher than the global average of five unprovoked deaths per year.

Overall, at least 32 shark attacks have been reported in the Bahamas since 1749.

Marine biologist Michael Heithaus said the attack in the Bahamas could be related to the high number of people in the region’s waters and its robust marine ecosystem.

He said the Bahamas had a huge variety of sharks, with the exception of bull sharks and tiger sharks, most of which went unnoticed.

“They are very large and they eat large prey,” Mr Heithouse said, adding that sharks have incredible sensory systems and can be attracted to food, sounds and smells in the water.
