In his speech, Theodoropoulos praised the UAE’s pioneering role in hosting major jiu-jitsu tournaments and its firm commitment to promoting the development of jiu-jitsu globally.
Meanwhile, UAEJJF Vice-President Mohamed Salem Al Dhaheri in his speech thanked His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, for his tireless support of the sport and athletes in their success locally and globally, as well as Sheikh Khalid Germany’s sponsorship of the Jiu-Jitsu World Championships.
“The support of wise leadership is the best guarantee that the tournament hosted by the UAE will be a complete success, achieve its goals and that Abu Dhabi’s reputation as the world’s jiu-jitsu capital will only grow,” said Daheri.
Theodoropoulos added: “The current iteration of this tournament continues to record impressive numbers in terms of players and participating countries. It demonstrates the extraordinary ability of the UAE capital to host the largest international jiu-jitsu competition to the highest standards. Abdulla Aldarmaki, who won silver in the +73kg category, started the UAE’s medal battle on day one. “I am delighted to bring home the silver medal on the opening day of the World Championships. Umarov Islam, on the other hand, said he played well and was happy to have finished second. “I fought hard even though I had to come second. Jiu-jitsu in Abu Dhabi is always exciting for me because I can compete and get in touch with the greatest athletes from all over the world.”
Saturday’s race also saw UAE’s Ammar Alhmmadi take gold in the under-50kg category, while Mansoor Alblooshi took silver in the under-38kg category. Bronze medals for Manea Abdulrahman (+73 kg), Eysa Alblooshi (-38 kg), Obaid Alketbi (-46 kg), Mohamed Alsada (-55 kg) and Andeez Ahmed (-66 kg) made the UAE side look strong day.
