DUBAI: His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, mourned the passing of Dr Joseph Muscat Baron, one of the pioneers of Dubai’s healthcare industry, on Friday.
On his Twitter page, Sheikh Mohammed paid tribute to the late doctor. “Dubai mourns today Dr Joseph Baron, an inspirational doctor whose medical service touched many lives. He will always be remembered for his knowledge, compassion and dedication. One of the people,” Sheikh Mohammed tweeted.
Dr Muscat-Baron was born in 1934 and is a British national with a degree in Pharmacy. He studied at St. Luke’s University in Malta. In 1960 he moved to the UK, where he studied and then worked in the health service for 17 years.
He came to UAE in 1977 and became Chief of General Medicine at Rashid Hospital and Dubai Hospital. He built the department from scratch, which now includes the major specialties of cardiology, pulmonology, and gastroenterology.
Dr. Baron was appointed Chair of the Drugs Committee due to his extensive experience in the field and has overseen the Committee for over 20 years.
One of the committee’s major achievements was the publication of the first drug reference book in the region.
In 1988, he spearheaded the creation of the Dubai Women’s Medical College. Dr. Baron is Professor of Internal Medicine and Cardiology.
