The Sheikh Zayed Book Award (SZBA) – organised by the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Centre (ALC), part of the Department of Culture and Tourism (DCT Abu Dhabi), has named Dr. Abdullah Al Ghathami as Cultural Spotlight 16th edition , in recognition of his notable contributions to cultural movements in the region and the Arab world.
The SZBA Scientific Committee and its Board of Directors selected Dr. Al Ghathami for his efforts in the fields of cultural criticism, women’s studies, poetry and critical thinking. Since the mid-1980s, he has led a major shift in Arab critical discourse.
The series of books he has written – in particular Al-Khatee’a wal Takfeer (Sin and Atonement); AlNaqed Al Thaqafi fee Qera’at Al Ansaq Al Thaqafiya (Cultural Criticism and Reading of Arabic Cultural Discourse); Tashreeh an-Nass (Texts Anatomy); Al-Mawqif min al-Hadatha (Attitudes to Modernity) and Al-Kitaba Did al-Kitaba (Against Writing), among others, helped solidify the foundations of modern Arabic literature and cultural criticism, opening up new avenues for discussing the legacy of poetry and modern creative Arabic works, reinterpreting them from a critical point of view.
Dr. Al Ghathami is one of the pioneers of a form of modernity that does not advocate breaking knowledge but stems from a belief in re-reading heritage works in a critical way, enriching their content and revealing their creativity.

He delves into its science, draws on its theories, and presents ideas covering A series of modern and contemporary critical essays on intellectual.As a critic, thinker, philosopher and scholar, Dr. Al Ghathami sheds light on key issues with deep ties to Arabic culture, which form the basis of his analysis and research. There is no doubt that he established himself as a pillar of literary and cultural criticism in the Arab world.”
Born in Unaiza, Saudi Arabia in 1947, Dr. Al Ghathami was a professor of criticism and theory at the Faculty of Arts, Department of Arabic, King Saud University. His academic and research efforts have shed light on women’s studies, which is often credited as the catalyst for launching the discipline in the Arab world. His work is also considered a foundational pillar of Arab critical and cultural discourse, propelling it into the Arab academic arena. Dr. Al Ghathami also consolidated scientific and cultural credentials in the fields of criticism, philosophy and reason, where he authored a series of books and studies, including Ma’alaat al-Falsafa: Min al-Falsafa ila al-Nathariya (The Consequences Philosophy: From Philosophy to Theory) and Al-Qabeela wal-Qaba’iliyya aw Hawiyyaat ma baad al-Hadatha (tribe and tribalism or postmodern identity).
During his long career of more than 5 years, Dr. Abdullah Al Ghathami launched a pioneering intellectual movement, drawing attention to the importance of cultural criticism. He has distinguished himself in a wide range of fields, started conversations, and explored many issues and topics that have helped cement his frontiers in key areas of the Arab region. The selection of Dr. Al Ghathami as the cultural focal point for the 16th Sheikh Zayed Book Prize revisits his work and his work that highlights a range of key issues in cultural and intellectual movements.
