“They were all wearing plaid shirts and jeans and combat boots. I didn’t want to be that – not because I didn’t think that looked cool, but I just wanted to have my own identity and stand out from the crowd. I always thought that’s what fashion was about where.
“I took a little note from the club scene I used to go to when I was young. I like neon colors, it’s not alternative rock.
“But when I showed up, it really took the alternative scene by surprise, because nobody was dressed like that. By default, I was definitely by my own rules, because I just didn’t want to look like everyone else.”
