Shonda Rhimes was warned ‘no one will watch’ Grey’s Anatomy ahead of the show’s premiere.
The medical drama has been a hit with TV audiences since it premiered in 2005 — but Shonda was initially greeted with skepticism from industry insiders who doubted it would be a success.
In a preview of her appearance on the “9 to 5ish” podcast – shared with E! News – Shonda said: “I think it feels really obvious now, but at the time, you have to remember that there has never been a lead character on a show who has had her sexuality on network TV.
“I remember being called into a room full of old people and told there was something wrong with the show because no one would watch a show about a woman sleeping with a man the night before her first day at work, and they It was a serious death.”
Shonda, meanwhile, previously admitted she wrote eight different endings for Grey’s Anatomy.
The acclaimed producer admits she’s distressed about how to end the televised medical drama starring Ellen Pompeo as Dr. Meredith Gray.
Talking about the future of the show, Shonda explained, “I’ve written the end of that series, I would say, eight times.”
What’s more, Shonda admits that some of her ideas are outdated.
The producer – who also created the political thriller series “Scandal” – explained: “I was like, ‘This is going to be the end!’ or, “This is going to be the last thing people said or did!” “All these things have happened. So I gave up, you know what I mean?
