SHRO medical conference, and honorees from entertainment, business, and politics feature at NIAF’s 47th annual event

Newswise – (Washington, DC) – The National Italian American Foundation (NIAF) will celebrate its 47th anniversary on Saturday, October 29, 2022 at the elegant Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, DC.

The Sbarro Health Research Organization (SHRO) will host a medical conference titled “Italian and U.S. Perspectives on Cancer Care” in collaboration with Temple University College of Science and Technology, the National Italian American Foundation (NIAF), and the Giovan Giacomo Giordano Foundation October 29 Saturday at 9am as part of the NIAF Grand Weekend.

The conference will focus on oncology research collaborations between Italy and the United States and the challenges of delivering cancer treatment to underprivileged communities. It will be presented by Dr. Antonio Giordano, President of SHRO, Director of Temple’s Sbarro Institute for Cancer Research and Molecular Medicine and Center for Biotechnology, and Dr. Andrea Morrione, who leads the Institute’s Program on Molecular Mechanisms of Cancer Signaling.

This year, NIAF will pay tribute to its 2022 Honors District Tuscany, the birthplace of the Italian language and the Renaissance. After a successful regional visit, NIAF’s Board of Directors met with the President of the Region of Tuscany and local government officials, and we are proud to partner with Tuscany. Each year, NIAF partners with a region in Italy to promote its culture, commerce and tourism in the United States throughout the year.

“Tuscany and the United States have strong historical ties. In June, I had the privilege of meeting with Eugenio Giani, President of the Region of Tuscany, and we discussed the importance of partnerships to foster cultural exchange,” NIAF President Robert E. . Carlucci said. “NIAF looks forward to promoting this beautiful region of America while strengthening our historic ties and business opportunities.”

During the Foundation Board’s visit to Tuscany, members visited Palazzo Strozzi, Scuola del Cuoio, the Etruscan Museum of Guarnacci and more. The annual “Italian Delegation” brings together NIAF leaders and Italian local government leaders.

In keeping with tradition, NIAF’s cornerstone program, the Peter F. Sekia Ambassador Discovery Tour, also visited the Honors District this summer. Twenty Italian-American college students took a fully paid trip exploring Tuscany.

The history of Tuscany makes the entire region a must-see destination to learn about what the region has contributed, and we are still enjoying it. Start with the Etruscan civilization that inspired the Roman Empire. The birthplace of the Renaissance began in Florence, the capital of Tuscany, thanks in part to the patronage of the Medici family for the arts and humanities. Visitors can trace the footsteps of Dante Alighieri, considered the “Father of Italian”.

Tuscany is located on the west coast of central Italy, along the Ligurian and Tyrrhenian seas. Throughout the region, you can discover the natural wonders of Tuscan Spa and the rolling hills that dot the countryside. The region is famous for its Chianti, Brunello di Montalcino, Nobile di Montepulciano and Super Tuscan red wines. Tuscan cuisine includes the purest extra virgin olive oil, pici pasta and Bistecca alla Fiorentina. No meal is complete without Vin Santo del Chianti DOC, a dessert wine that is a symbol of Tuscan hospitality.

Today, Tuscany continues to cement its historic position as a cornerstone of the Renaissance by inspiring the rebirth of dreams. Whether through museums, festivals, fashion or more.

NIAF will also celebrate six distinguished Italian and Italian-American recipients for outstanding achievement and leadership in their fields. These recipients include: Michael R. Pompeo, 70th Secretary of State, for his service to our country; Congressman serving in New Jersey’s 9th Congressional District, Italian-American Congressional Delegation Co-Chairman and Dean of Assemblyman Bill Pascrell, Jr.; Chef and Emmy Award-winning TV personality Giada De Laurentiis, known for his Emmy-winning series Everyday Italian on Food Network; Visionary Automotive Designer, Strategist Jason Castriota, Home, Innovator and Disruptor; COO International, Walgreens Boots Alliance Ornella Barra, a pioneer in the pharmaceutical industry; and Paolo Scaroni, Vice Chairman of Rothschild & Co, Chairman of Giuliani SpA and Chairman of AC Milan, a top Italian football team and 2022 Serie A champions.

Giada De Laurentiis will curate a menu for NIAF’s 47th Gala, inspired by Tuscan cuisine.

Hosting the official event will be Maria Bartiromo, NIAF board member, anchor and global market editor for the FOX Business Network and FOX News Channel; and Joe Piscopo, one of America’s most popular comedians and former Saturday Night Live star .

Celebrations for the evening will begin at NIAF’s Campari Aperitivo, where guests will mingle with the approximately 750 guests expected to attend the evening while enjoying a selection of Campari products.

The evening will be preceded by the NIAF Forum, a series of seminars related to various aspects of Italy-US relations, which will take place throughout the day. U.S. Army Veteran and War Institute President Gen. Jack Keane will speak at the Forum Lectures Luncheon. At a later date, NIAF will publish a weekend schedule with details on each workshop.

NIAF’s Campari aperitif starts at 5.30pm and dinner will be at 7pm. The evening will end with an after-get off work entertainment party.
