Sichuan earthquake: three dead in China, dozens injured-News

[ad_1]

At least 10,000 people have been transferred to emergency shelters.

On Thursday, a shallow earthquake in southwest China killed 3 people and injured dozens of others, triggering the second highest emergency response by rescuers in Sichuan Province.

Before dawn on Thursday, the earthquake occurred in Luxian County, about 120 kilometers southwest of Chongqing. Chongqing and its surrounding areas have a population of about 30 million.

The footage of the Sichuan Fire Brigade showed that rescuers quickly lifted people out of the rubble and used stretchers to lift them out of the damaged building.

Dozens of houses in Lu County were razed to the ground, and many houses were damaged. Local media released images of the collapsed ceiling of the hospital, when residents were walking around on the street after warning not to return indoors.

The US Geological Survey has set the magnitude of the earthquake at 5.4, but the magnitude measured by the China Seismological Network Center is 6.0. Both place it at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles).

The Lu County authorities stated that the earthquake caused “3 deaths, 3 serious injuries, and 57 minor injuries.”

The local government stated that at least 10,000 people have been transferred to emergency shelters.

CCTV’s live broadcast in Lu County showed that workers climbed up ladders in the downpour to remove dangerous debris hanging from the building, including half-smashed glass panels.

Another video from the Sichuan Daily showed that early Thursday, students evacuated the dormitory in the dark, holding umbrellas and carrying backpacks.

The authorities downplayed the direct threat of greater aftershocks.

Du Bin, deputy director of the Sichuan Earthquake Administration, told reporters: “It is unlikely that a larger earthquake will occur in this area in the near future, but the aftershocks will continue for some time.”

The state-run CGTN shared security camera footage that showed TVs and refrigerators shaking on the walls of houses during the earthquake, decorations smashing on the floor, and cracks passing through the building.

The picture shows bricks scattered on the road and trees in some areas have been felled.

The U.S. Geological Survey stated in its preliminary assessment that it “may cause major damage and the disaster may spread widely.”

The local government in Sichuan stated on Weibo that after the earthquake, multiple power lines were interrupted and 62,000 households were cut off.

The local government stated that traffic on highways passing through the area had been diverted to make way for emergency vehicles and avoid damaged roads.

Earthquakes occur frequently in China, especially in the western and southwestern mountainous areas.

In 2008, a 7.9-magnitude earthquake occurred in Sichuan Province, killing 87,000 people or missing them.

Thousands of children died as a result of the collapse of poorly constructed school buildings, but because this issue involves a political aspect, the government has not been able to announce the exact number of deaths.

Thursday’s earthquake occurred a few months after a series of strong earthquakes in sparsely populated areas of northwest and southwest China in May, killing at least two people and injuring dozens of others.
