According to the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Center (ALC) under the Ministry of Culture and Tourism (DCT Abu Dhabi), the 16th Sheikh Zayed Book Awards has received 1,000 entries in nine categories.
The submission process started in June and lasted until October 1. Works in Arabic, English, Spanish, Italian, German, and French have been submitted, and compared to previous awards, there has been a significant increase in Russian literary works.
This number of submissions was announced at the first virtual meeting of the Sheikh Zayed Book Award (SZBA) Reading Group, which has already begun the review process for the 16th edition. The jury will continue to review the submitted works until the end of the submission period on October 1 to assess whether they meet the award criteria and select eligible works to enter the shortlist for the award.
The group was chaired by His Excellency Dr. Ali Bin Tamim, Secretary-General of SZBA and Chairman of ALC. Also present at the meeting were panel members Professor Khalil Al Shaikh from Jordan and Sultan Al Amimi, UAE literary critic and poet, who are both members of the scientific committee of the award, and Dr. Ali Al-Kaabi from the UAE.

The shortlist will be announced in November, when the jury will begin to evaluate the shortlisted works. The judging criteria include professional knowledge, clarity of analysis and composition, beauty of language and style, adequacy of information, comprehensiveness, relevance, reliability. The academic integrity of sources and references, citations and documents, originality and novelty of the subject matter.
The judging process will continue until January 2022, when the SZBA Science Committee will review the judges’ report to announce the shortlist in March. The scientific committee and board will then evaluate it to approve the final winner, which will be announced in April 2022.
