Sir Elton John considered Jerry Lee Lewis a “groundbreaking” musician.
The controversial star died of natural causes at his home in DeSoto County, Mississippi, at the age of 87, and Elton took to social media to pay warm tributes to the “Big Fireball” producer.
Elton wrote on Instagram: “Without Jerry Lee Lewis, I wouldn’t be who I am today. He was groundbreaking, exciting, he smashed the piano. Also a talented singer. Thank you for your groundbreaking inspiration and all that rock and roll.” n’roll recalls. @jerryleelewisthekiller #RIP (sic)”
The Rolling Stones’ Ronnie Wood also paid tribute to the rock pioneer.
He tweeted: “RIP JLL the KILLER – what a man. (sic)”
Sir Ringo Starr also took to the Weibo platform to pay his respects.
Beatles member Ringo wrote online: “God bless Jerry Lee Lewis and love his family Ringo. (sic)”
The iconic star’s representative, Zach Farnham, previously confirmed that Lewis died of natural causes at his home.
Zach shared: “His seventh wife, Judith, was by his side when he died at his home in DeSoto County, Mississippi, south of Memphis.
“He told her in his final days that he welcomed the afterlife and that he was not afraid.”
The “High School Confidential” producer started his career in the ’50s as a rock artist and went on to achieve great success in the country music scene.
Lewis – whose death was erroneously reported by some media on Wednesday (10.26.22) – won four Grammys during his career.
He was also inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
