Sir Jonathan Price denies claims Prince Philip is racist | Entertainment

Sir Jonathan Price says Prince Philip is ‘far from being racist’.

The 75-year-old actor, who will play the late Duke of Edinburgh in the fifth and sixth seasons of Netflix’s hit series The Crown, claimed Philip’s famous gaffe was because he was a “product” of his era.

Jonathan told The Telegraph: “The first thing young people say to him is that he’s racist. Far from it. He’s a product of an era of accidental racism, but I don’t think he’s racist at all.

“He was very smart, curious, and innovative for his time. He toured, spoke, lectured, encouraged. Although he felt inferior for being part of the monarchy, he did what he could.”

Jonathan explains how talking to the carriage driver – a hobby the late royal took up for fun later in life – gave him valuable insights into Philip.

The ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ star said: “I don’t think he’s very outgoing and aloof, but when I start talking to people who know him – the special adviser on etiquette for the Brotherhood of Carriage and ‘The Crown’ and he’s very close -Obviously, he’s a good guy to spend time with, very funny and full of energy. None of the people I spoke to had bad words.”

Jonathan explained that playing Philip – who died in 2021 at the age of 99 – was his toughest “acting challenge”.

“It was my biggest acting challenge – and it still is,” he said.

“After he died, it was even more daunting. You watched the documentary commemorating him and his grandson, and you saw how he was loved by his grandson, and suddenly this side of him was unknown to the public. He was a very Big surprise. I wish I knew more about him over the years.
