Abu Dhabi University (ADU) participated in 7day The University of Sharjah held its annual international ArabWIC conference on a virtual basis on August 25, 2021. The conference aims to highlight the contributions of Arab women in computing and technology. Six undergraduate and graduate students from the Department of Computer Science and Information Technology participated in the conference. The Electrical, Computer and Biomedical Engineering Department of the ADU School of Engineering showcased their advanced artificial intelligence (AI) and distributed system projects and research results.

Under the guidance of Professor Mourad Elhadef, ADU Computer Science Professor and Head of Computer Science and IT Department, and Dr. Heba Ismail, ADU Assistant Professor of Computer Science, ADU’s participating team presented four research papers at the conference. These projects include the “Jusoor: Wearable Communication Device for the Deaf and Blind” developed by Fatima Abdelmagid, Hamda Fasla and Huda Khafaji, and the “E-Learning Mood Analysis Framework in the UAE” developed by Dana Wehbe, Hajer AlMaskari, Kholoud AlSeriedi and Ahmed AlHammadi, by Farah “Covisstance Chatbot” developed by Shaik and Arooba Khalid and “Serverless Academic Advisor Chatbot” developed by Rawan Elabyad, Nada Hussein and Salma Abdelhalim.

Each project uses and implements cutting-edge technologies such as advanced artificial intelligence models and serverless computing to solve key real-life problems.

Jusoor is an artificial intelligence system that helps deaf and blind people to communicate naturally with their peers through instant conversations. The UAE e-learning sentiment analysis framework provides real-time insights into the public’s sentiments and opinions on the UAE e-learning process through sentiment analysis of social media content to help decision makers and education regulators. Covisstance chat bot is an advanced serverless chat bot system, which is designed with natural language understanding and can help patients find hospitals with available beds and resources. Finally, the serverless academic advisor chatbot aims to reduce the burden on academic advisors after COVID-19 by allowing college students to query academic affairs virtually through virtual assistants supported by Microsoft Teams.

Maha Yaghi, a master of science student in electrical and computer engineering, also published her research paper during the conference, entitled “Motion tracking 3D visualization system for segmented ROI in medical imaging.” Her research was supervised by Professor Mohammed Ghazal, Professor and Head of the Department of Electrical, Computer, and Biomedical Engineering, and Dr. Huma Zia, Assistant Professor of Computer Engineering, and proposed an analysis system that can visualize the output of 3D segmented abnormalities. At the same time, Tasnim Basmaji, a master of science student in electrical and computer engineering, published a research paper entitled “Emergency and rapid deployment of contactless IoT elevator control panels during a pandemic”. Her research was supervised by Professor Mohammed Ghazal, Associate Professor of Electrical Engineering, Dr. Anas Altarabsheh, and Dr. Huma Zia, and proposed a non-contact elevator control system to reduce the risk of spreading coronavirus when using elevators.

Dr. Hamdi Sheibani, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, commented on the participation: “As a university that stimulates creativity and encourages innovation, our students adopt advanced technologies while developing out-of-the-box solutions. In Engineering College, our goal is to cultivate a community of learners dedicated to solving some of the most complex engineering challenges. During our participation in the international ArabWIC conference, I observed that our students learn, grow, and thrive in the world of technology. Dedication. I am proud to say that our students have participated with such enthusiasm and enthusiasm and developed the most innovative and pioneering project in the history of the School of Engineering.”

Conference Chairperson, Associate Professor of Computer Science at the University of Sharjah, and Conference Host Dr. Manar Abu Talib said: “We are delighted to see the complexity and quality of this year’s research papers. Conferences such as ArabWIC are designed to inspire a new generation of female leaders in computing. Paved the way.”

ArabWIC is a non-profit organization that aims to support, inspire and expand Arab women’s efforts in the computer field. The ArabWIC conference is an important platform for the organization to stimulate community vitality, help promote connections and engage participants in international research on computing and technology.
