Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine: Russian missiles struck an apartment building in Kryvyi Rih, the hometown of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, on Tuesday, killing at least six people, officials said.

Residents sob outside a burnt apartment building as smoke billows from it after an early morning attack in the central Ukrainian city. At least 25 people were injured and others may still be trapped under the rubble, officials said.

Olha Chernosova, who lives in a five-story apartment building, said she was awakened by a thunderous explosion and thrown from her bed by the violent shock wave.

“I ran to my front door, but it was hot in there … the smoke was heavy,” she said.

“What can I do? I’m sitting on the balcony, scared I’m going to lose consciousness. It’s been a long time since no one came… I thought I’d have to jump up a tree.”

All around her, the streets and yards were littered with glass and brick. At least five cars were damaged.

Ihor Lavrenenko, who lives in a different part of the building, said he heard two explosions.

“I woke up from the first bang, a weak bang, and went straight out onto the balcony. Then the second erupted overhead and I watched hot debris fall from the balcony,” he said.

Regional governor Serhiy Lysak said on the Telegram messaging app that rescue operations were underway in apartment buildings and a destroyed warehouse.

Mayor Oleksandr Vilkul confirmed at least six people were killed. In an earlier post, he had said three people had been killed, with at least seven believed to be trapped under the rubble and 25 others injured.

president condemns attack

“Russian killers continue to wage war on residential buildings, ordinary cities and people,” Zelensky, who was born in Crivello state, said in a telegram.

Russia had no immediate comment on the attack. Since its full-scale invasion in February 2022, it has repeatedly attacked cities across Ukraine, although it denies targeting civilians.

Moscow has also accused Ukraine of conducting cross-border shelling during a counteroffensive in Kiev. Several houses were damaged and power was cut off in two villages in the region near the border, the governor of Russia’s Kursk region said on Tuesday.

Air strike sirens sounded across Ukraine in the early hours of Tuesday, with military officials in Kiev saying air defenses destroyed all Russian missiles aimed at the Ukrainian capital.

Ukraine’s top military command said the air force destroyed 10 of 14 Russian cruise missiles fired at Ukraine, as well as one of four Iranian-made drones.
