Brandstein and Beatts first collaborated on the 1982 hit “Square Pegs,” starring Sarah Jessica Parker. “[Anne] From New York and the entire “Saturday Night Live” scene. That’s when I was a little bit in awe of her comedy credentials,” Brandstein said. She teamed up with the Beatts again on “Just Say Julie,” starring Julie Brown, the “Earth Girls Are Simple” writer.

“There weren’t a lot of women doing that. She was fantastic, fantastic. There are tons of opportunities for women in comedy now. But she was a pioneer back then,” Brandstein added. “I think her legacy is that she made it safe for women to think it was a career opportunity.”

In a statement to TheWrap, Bloom revealed a working title for the project: “The Girl Who Would Be King.”

“Annie was a pathfinder and certainly paved the way for those who came after her… Viewers will learn about Annie from National Lampoon to Saturday Night Live and Square Nails to her career at USC , UCLA and Chapman’s journey,” Bloom said. “We will hear from those she has influenced, worked for and worked with.”

“She’s super smart and understands comedy better than 99 percent of comedians. She can give you something funny anytime, anywhere,” says Bloom. He called Tina Fey a “long-time admirer” of Beatz.

Fey may have borrowed the character of Liz Lemon’s writing idol Rosemary Howard (Carrie Fisher) in part from Beatts.

“I described her in the pitch as a cactus fruit, which is a wonderful prickly pear that stings you if you try to touch it because it has spines,” Brandstein said. “But if you open it up, it’s very juicy and sweet. That’s what Anne is.”
