After completing a $5.3 million renovation of the Solvang Festival Theater, the Solvang Theater Festival received an Arts Leadership Award from the Santa Barbara County Arts Council. Solvang Theatrefest is the non-profit organization that owns and operates the Solvang Festival Theatre.

Established in 2006 to recognize leaders who have had a significant impact on the arts and sciences of the region, the annual award was passed on Oct. 19 to Theaterfest representatives through a resolution at the County Board of Supervisors meeting.

The theater’s redevelopment project began construction in September 2021 and concluded in July 2022, ensuring structural integrity, safety, and accessibility through new electrical and technical capabilities that enhance lighting and sound.

Overall, the design improves the audience experience and comfort through taller walls, acoustic improvements and new seating.

To fund the transformation project, Solvang Theatrefest turned to the community for support. Imagine! The Building the Future campaign, which started in 2019, received more than 700 donations from individuals, businesses and foundations.

Accepting the award, Denise De Bellefeuille, Chairman of the Theatrefest Board of Directors, said: “We have ensured that many more generations will experience the magic of live theatre under the stars in the Santa Ynez Valley.

“We have big plans for this new theater. Concerts, plays, comedy, weddings, receptions, festivals, even a stunt dog show in November.”

The Board of Supervisors established the County Arts Council in 1977 to support, promote, and encourage all County residents to participate in and engage with arts and culture. Presented in October, the award has been recognized by the White House and Congress as National Arts and Humanities Month for 38 consecutive years.
