The mayor of Johannesburg was killed in a car accident as he returned from campaigning with South Africa’s president on Saturday, just over a month after being elected, his office said in a statement.
Before the accident, 46-year-old Jolidee Matongo was returning from a voter registration event in Soweto Town.

According to the website of the City of Johannesburg, Matongo was born in Soweto and became a member of the ANC Youth League after participating in student political activities at the age of 13.
