[ad_1]

The mayor of Johannesburg was killed in a car accident as he returned from campaigning with South Africa’s president on Saturday, just over a month after being elected, his office said in a statement.

Before the accident, 46-year-old Jolidee Matongo was returning from a voter registration event in Soweto Town.

President Cyril Ramaphosa said in a tweet: “Given that Mayor Matongo was full of energy and enthusiasm when interacting with me and the residents of Soweto shortly before his death, it is difficult to understand this tragedy. “

“None of us was able to prepare for this sudden loss, which caused the economic center of our country to lose its second executive mayor in two months.”

Matongo’s predecessor died from Covid-19 complications in July, and Matongo was elected on August 10.

The governor of Gauteng Province, David Makhura, also participated in the Soweto voter registration event. He said the news made him “shocked and shocked.”

“(Matongo) performed his duties with a calm and calm attitude and continued to work selflessly to serve the citizens of Johannesburg,” he added.

A photo posted by Ramaphosa and Matongo himself on social media early in the afternoon shows two men walking near Soweto and talking with residents. Matongo is wearing bright yellow sportswear with the African National Congress printed on it. Sign.

According to the website of the City of Johannesburg, Matongo was born in Soweto and became a member of the ANC Youth League after participating in student political activities at the age of 13.

Matongo’s office said that more details about the accident will be announced “in due course.”
