South Korea to import hydrogen from Malaysia, UAE

[ad_1]

South Korea will import hydrogen from Malaysia and the United Arab Emirates.

The South Korean government announced on January 8 that hydrogen produced in Malaysia and the United Arab Emirates will be imported in 2027, used for power generation, converted into ammonia and exported.

The hydroelectric hydrogen production plan in Malaysia is provided by Samsung Engineering and Lotte Chemical. In the UAE, Korea Electric Power Corporation and Samsung C&T will produce hydrogen from solar energy. Volumes from these two countries are estimated at 600 000 tonnes and 200 000 tonnes per year, respectively.

The government plans to increase domestic hydrogen demand ahead of imports. Hydrogen-LNG fuel co-combustion is being tested in this regard. According to the government, that figure amounts to a 10 percent carbon reduction when LNG fuel is burned with 30 percent hydrogen, rising to 21 percent at 50 percent and 52 percent at 80 percent. In addition, it plans to use ammonia to reduce carbon emissions from coal-fired power generation.

According to industry sources, South Korea needs to make better use of hydrogen and nuclear power to meet its carbon reduction targets. Against this backdrop, the government’s plans include the development of ammonia fueled ships by 2026 and liquid hydrogen carriers by 2029.
