The Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) and the Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (ENEC) announced on June 9 that they had completed the construction phase of the UAE’s last No. 4 reactor and had entered the operational readiness phase.

According to Korea Electric Power Corporation, the No. 4 reactor began pouring foundation concrete for the nuclear reactor building in July 2015. The room temperature pressure test was successfully completed in May 2020, the high temperature function test was completed in July 2022, and the pilot test was recently completed. . At present, it has entered the operational preparation stage of obtaining the operating permit and loading fuel from the UAE regulator.

UAE reactors 1 to 3 are due to start commercial operations in April 2021, March 2022 and February 2023, respectively. All three reactors provide a steady stream of clean electricity to the UAE 24 hours a day, with each reactor launching less than a year apart.

The four reactors are built every other year or so, and the successful experience of the previous reactors is reflected in the follow-up reactors to achieve better results.

“The Korean team, including KEPCO, plans to successfully complete the UAE nuclear power project with all our capabilities,” a KEPCO official said, revealing plans to “use this as a stepping stone to aggressively enter the growing overseas nuclear power market.”
