Relations between the UAE and Israel have improved over the past 24 months. This allowed the Arabs to demand the purchase of this particular missile system, and Israel allowed it.The Israeli online portal Haaretz writes that the missile systems have a range of 70 kilometers, classifying them as medium-range missile systems [MR-SAM]. Barack 8 also has a remote version [LR-SAM].

Haaretz wrote, “Newly acquired UAE” It will be protected from Iranian ballistic missiles, cruise missiles and drones. BulgarianMilitary.com recalled that Iran-backed groups attacked the UAE’s infrastructure on January 17 this year. Days after the attack, Haaretz wrote, “The UAE has secretly asked Israel to deliver the Barak-8”. However, BulgarianMilitary.com understands this “Secret Request” Sources from the Israeli Ministry of Defense and announced the news on February 7.

On February 7, we also reported on Spyder, another anti-missile system discussed. Israel later agreed to sell the UAE the “spider,” which can intercept and destroy airborne targets at an altitude of 16 kilometers and a distance of 35 kilometers.

Why choose the Barak-8 missile?

The Barak-8 is an Israeli-Indian surface-to-air missile. It is the product of an engineering collaboration between Israel Aerospace Industries and India’s Defence Research and Development Organization. The two countries are co-developing India’s Bharat Electronics and Israel’s Rafael Advanced Defense Systems.

The Barak-8 is a brand new development in this field and was officially unveiled in 2016 after successfully passing multiple tests in both countries, and mass production began in 2017.

Its operational characteristics are medium-range missiles for air defense, helicopters, drones, ballistic missiles, anti-ship missiles, and fighter jets. The missile weighs 275kg and carries a 60kg warhead.

The Barak-8 has a maximum flight speed of Mach 3 and is powered by a two-stage smokeless pulse rocket engine. The Barak-8 is characterized by a very rapid deployment rate, which is key to the UAE’s almost immediate response to aerial threats. It can intercept and hit targets up to 150 kilometers away.

The Barak-8 can be launched from a ship or from the ground, in both cases the launch is vertical. However, one of its advantages that is important to the UAE is that the Barak-8 has a two-way data connection and an active RF/IIR seeker. That is, the Barak-8 searches for airborne targets in two ways—either by direct communication with the radar transmitter or by detecting infrared emissions from the target.
