Special Olympics UAE launches ‘Road to Berlin’ campaign

Abu Dhabi: Special Olympics UAE has launched its ‘Road to Berlin’ campaign alongside a training camp in preparation for Special Olympics World Berlin 2023, which will take place from 17-25 June.

The UAE will compete in 20 different sports and the UAE Special Olympics delegation is one of the largest in the MENA region, comprising 75 athletes with intellectual and developmental disabilities, 32 unified partners, 46 coaches, medical staff and administration and technical staff.

The first of three major training camps kicked off in Al Ain last December. In addition, athletes also participated in national unified activities such as ADNOC Marathon, National Table Tennis Championships, National Team Roller Skating Trials, Mubadala World Tennis Championships, and Asian Weightlifting Championships.

Special Olympics UAE athletes will compete in swimming, badminton, bowling, athletics, beach volleyball men’s team, volleyball women’s team, basketball, cycling, equestrian and weightlifting.

Special Olympics UAE National Director Talal Al Hashemi said: “As we prepare for Special Olympics World Berlin 2023, we are confident that our athletes can achieve many victories and medals. They will set an inspiring example as representatives of the UAE and will build on our tremendous success at Special Olympics World Abu Dhabi 2019.”

He added: “Athletes are practicing and preparing through a number of regional and international Special Olympics events, such as the Malta Invitational 2022 and Special Olympics Austria 2022, before training camp begins in Al Ain in December. We Proud that the commitment of our athletes is evident during training.”

As Special Olympics UAE hosts the 2019 Special Olympics World Games in Abu Dhabi, it aims to continue the momentum during the 2023 Special Olympics World Games in Berlin and work with various national and international stakeholders to further integrate sport, Health, education and community at large.

Special Olympics World Abu Dhabi 2019 is one of the largest global inclusive sporting events, featuring more than 7,500 athletes and athletes from more than 190 countries.

Quality of Life

As part of the Abu Dhabi 2019 World Games legacy, UAE leaders announced 31 pieces of legislation, initiatives and projects to better meet the needs and aspirations of people of determination in sport, education, health and culture, and to enhance their overall quality of life.

Despite the Covid-19 pandemic the following year, Special Olympics UAE continued its efforts to roll out virtual events and activities. As the pandemic recedes, Special Olympics UAE has organized multiple sports forums across the UAE to ensure a steady and safe return to the field for athletes.

UAE Special Olympics athletes won a number of international titles last year, including 16 medals at the Malta Invitational 2022, 16 medals during their participation in the Special Olympics Austrian National Games 2022, and the women’s soccer team in the Unity Cup Get second place Detroit 2022.
