Spinneys becomes first retailer to join ‘Food for Life’

Locally owned supermarket Spinneys has become the first retailer to partner with the ‘Food for Life’ programme, a UAE initiative to drive a nationwide transition from sustainable food systems to healthier diets.

Led by the Ministry of Climate Change and Environment (MOCCAE) and the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP), the initiative, in partnership with the Emirates Foundation for Nature and the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), supports the UAE’s goals as the country strives to become a sustainable food system A global leader in halving food waste by 2030, in line with the 2051 National Food Security Strategy.

“Food for Life” aims to reveal the role of food in our lives and the impact on the environment when it is wasted, and aims to mobilize stakeholders across the food ecosystem to help individuals change their daily behaviors for more sustainable lifestyles, and Cut waste by a third by shopping, cooking and eating smarter.

Mariam bint Mohammed Almheiri, Minister of Climate Change and Environment, said: “The global food system is the single largest contributor to biodiversity loss, deforestation, drought, freshwater pollution and the extinction of aquatic wildlife. It is also the second largest source of greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to the Climate change contributes significantly. In addition, one-third of the edible food produced globally is wasted.

“With all of this in mind, we see an urgency to make smarter choices around food. That’s why Food for Life aims to educate consumers to truly appreciate food and keep it out of the bin. Committed to reducing its impact on the environment and creating a more sustainable future for all, Spinneys has also pledged to halve its food waste by 2030 and pledge not to waste any food fit for human consumption.

Consumer Education Activities

As part of Spinneys’ “Love Food, Don’t Waste” initiative, the retailer rolled out consumer education campaigns and food donations in its stores and digital channels throughout the Holy Month.

According to the Dubai Carbon Centre of Excellence, food waste in the UAE is estimated at 3.2 million tonnes, with around 38% of the food prepared every day being wasted, most of which comes directly from households2. This figure rises to 60% during Ramadan.

To help raise awareness of the impact of food waste, Spinneys shoppers are encouraged to reuse their food scraps and repurpose leftovers with simple tips and tricks to make their family food go further and last longer. The supermarket also identified some of the most wasteful foods and provided helpful guidelines to help communities use and store food in different ways – like potatoes, tomatoes and apples.

food donation drive

In support of the UAE Food Bank’s Save 1 Million Meals 3 campaign, Spinneys has run a food donation drive across its stores and production facilities, ensuring that any excess food is redistributed to families in need during Ramadan. Spinneys also helps UAE Food Bank re-use the high-quality leftovers it collects daily into pre-prepared products.
