A new recycled paper mill will be built in the Khalifa Economic Zone of Abu Dhabi (KEZAD) to support the UAE’s circular economy.
The mill will produce eco-friendly biodegradable recycled kraft paper in Abu Dhabi following an agreement between Star Paper Mill and RC Paper Machines, investing AED 200 million (US$ 54 million) to expand its existing capacity.
The plant will produce jumbo rolls of recycled kraft paper in a space of 59,000 square meters. These reels will be used to manufacture corrugated box and bag paper using recycled raw materials.
Kezad confirmed that it has signed a 50-year land lease agreement with specialist paper towel manufacturer Star Paper Mill to set up the facility.
Earlier this year, Renov8 Polymer Industries Ltd announced it would invest AED552 million in plastic recycling facilities. In June, the emirate of Abu Dhabi banned single-use plastic bags.
Hussain Adam Ali, Chairman of Star Paper Mill, said: “Aligned with the vision of the UAE leadership, we at Star Paper Mill believe that sustainability and the adoption of circular systems are critical to future success and long-term value creation”
“We’re using this opportunity as a huge advantage for us to create products that reduce carbon emissions and operate as a sustainable industry.”
The paper mill will have an installed capacity of 135,000 tons.
The company has also set aside an additional 32,000 sqm next to the main land parcel earmarked for the project to accommodate expected demand growth.
The project will treat waste generated at the facility, using a sewage treatment plant to recycle the water and reuse it.
The raw materials used, including OCC, NCC, NDLKC and sack kraft waste, will be sourced locally in the UAE to reduce transport-related emissions, the company said.
Star Paper Mill’s current facility is a 27,000 square meter tissue mill with a current installed capacity of 36,000 tons.
