World No. 4 Stefanos Tsitsipas defeated Cameron Norrie at the Mubadala World Tennis Championships in Abu Dhabi on Friday.
Tsitsipas found his fastest level and won 6-1, 6-4 to avenge his loss to Norrie at the Diriyah Tennis Cup in Saudi Arabia.
The victory allowed Tsitsipas to advance to the semifinals against U.S. Open finalist Kasparrud.
Nori and Tsitsipas met for the second time in a week at an exhibition following the Brit’s 6-4 6-4 victory over world No. 4 Riyadh.
The Brit got off to a painful start after a protracted but ultimately futile attempt to avoid a break on serve in the opening game.
The 27-year-old had to save another break point before the British number one broke serve 1-3.
Tsitsipas then continued to take control of the set, breaking serve again and serving for the opening, and took a 6-1 lead after serving in the 39th minute.
With Tsitsipas serving without a break point in his first game, Norrie saved the start of the second set, breaking the Greek star’s winning streak. There were tense moments in the second set when the world number 14 asked the referee to overrule the call because he disagreed (officially he couldn’t), while the 24-year-old was able to hold on to 4-4.
The four-time ATP Tour champion’s serve was then broken by Tsitsipas at the crucial moment when Nori appeared to back down and nearly gave the world No. 4 the win in the match, giving him a chance to serve for the match. Avenging last week’s defeat in Saudi Arabia, the Greek was able to win 6-1 6-4 in one hour and 24 minutes.
“I think it was a good game for me, but Cam also tried to play his best. Cam has played well in Saudi Arabia. But for sure, playing here is really good. It was a pleasure,” the world No. 4 said after Friday’s straight-sets win over Norrie.
“I really enjoyed this game with Cameron, and I really hope we have more chances to play against each other in the future. I think it’s good for us, I think it’s good for the game. Exhibit slightly Different, but I hope we can face each other more in Grand Slams and Masters 1000.”
Luther, who had a bye in the semifinals, waited for Sisipas.
