Heavy rains and strong winds from Tropical Storm Nauru swept northeastern Thailand early on Thursday, knocking down trees and sparking flash floods in several areas.
At least one person has been killed and two injured in fallen trees in Si Saket province, but no other major damage has been reported.
Ubon Ratchathani, the province with the heaviest downpours, recorded its heaviest rainfall of 215.7mm in 24 hours, prompting authorities to evacuate more than 5,000 people to shelters set up on high ground near City Hall and, in some cases, the side of the highway.
At least five schools were closed.
Rescuers waded through waist-high floodwaters distributing food and care kits to residents trapped at home in some areas.
According to the Ministry of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation, more than 10,000 households have been affected by the floods.
The Meteorological Department said the storm had weakened and was slowly moving west and northwest, but warned that seasonal monsoon rains would continue to hit the north, northeast and central areas, including Bangkok and its vicinity, east and south.
Before hitting Thailand, Typhoon Nauru weakened to a tropical storm over central Vietnam on Wednesday.
