Most Nigerians evacuated to the United Arab Emirates after being stranded in the country have complained that they cannot get work permits due to a new policy by the Middle Eastern country’s government, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said.
report says On Sunday, 542 Nigerians were evacuated from the UAE and arrived at Abuja’s Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.
The evacuees who returned on the Max Air flight included 79 men, 460 women and three infants, according to NEMA.
Manzo Ekeziel, head of NEMA’s media department, told reporters that plans are in place to allow more Nigerians stranded in the UAE to return.
He said: “The federal government has received a letter and decided to support them in their return. I don’t know if there is a diplomatic dispute.
He continued: “Some people can’t come in today, but arrangements are being made for them to be delivered, maybe tomorrow. I’m not sure of the total number of people who are still behind.
“One of the evacuees from Ebonyi state, Blessing Okorie, interacted with the new visa policy; and they were unable to obtain work permits.
“She said she went to that country with valid documents, but according to her, after some time, the UAE government proposed a new visa policy that prevented her from obtaining a work permit. Because of this, she was fired, according to her Said she had to be busy with work.”
Meanwhile, the evacuees were given $100 each to facilitate their return to their homes, according to a statement issued by the Nigerian Diaspora Council.
