STRENGTHEN: Xi Jinping addresses officials amid torrential rain in China | World News

[ad_1]

Chinese President Xi Jinping instructed governments at all levels to attach great importance to the safety of people’s lives and property, and the heavy floods and mudslides across the country were caused by the rainfall. In the past few weeks, southern, central and northern provinces have seen heavy rainfall. The downpour displaced thousands, destroyed bridges and washed away cars and homes.

Chongqing and other places suffered heavy rainfall. Videos widely shared on social media showed surging rivers in towns and cities. Xinhua News Agency reported that Xi Jinping asked the National Defense Command, the Ministry of Emergency Management, and the Ministry of Water Resources to strengthen coordination, consultation and research.

Prior to this, the Ministry of Water Resources initiated Level IV emergency response to flood control in Inner Mongolia and Liaoning, Jilin, and Heilongjiang provinces. Heavy rains are also expected to continue in these areas.

In northwestern China’s Shaanxi province, last week’s “once in 50 years” torrential rain damaged homes and roads. In Hunan Province, more than 10,000 people were evacuated due to flooding, and more than 2,000 houses were evacuated.

Authorities have warned of extreme weather and “multiple natural disasters” in July. The meteorological agency warned that “China will face various natural disasters such as floods, strong convective weather, typhoons and high temperatures in July,” according to Xinhua.

The floods coincided with a record-breaking heatwave in China, with China’s National Meteorological Administration warning residents in many areas to stay indoors as temperatures soared above 35 degrees Celsius.
