The ICRC says the first shipment of international humanitarian aid has arrived in Port Sudan following the outbreak of conflict in the country.

The eight-ton shipment contained surgical materials for Sudanese hospitals and Sudanese Red Crescent volunteers, including anesthetics, dressings and sutures.

Patrick Yusuf, the ICRC’s regional director for Africa, said: “Health care workers are Sudan The impossible has been done, caring for the wounded without water, electricity and basic medical supplies.

“The logistics required to move supplies in the midst of an intense conflict are extremely difficult and we are delighted to be able to bring these medical supplies into the country.”

What happened in Sudan?

The ICRC is understood to be sending a second plane with more medical supplies and first responders.

Earlier Sunday, rival Sudanese forces accused each other of violating an expiring ceasefire.

Hundreds have been killed and thousands injured since a long-simmering power struggle between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) erupted on April 15.

The Sudanese army said it had destroyed an RSF convoy heading from the west to the capital Khartoum.

The RSF said the army used artillery and warplanes to attack its positions in various parts of Khartoum province.

None of these claims are independent.
