Survivor of deadly Bronx fire files $1 billion lawsuit against building’s landlord (updated)

More than a dozen people were killed in a deadly fire in New York City’s Bronx last Sunday, at first Nineteen people were announced as dead in the fire, but officials later provided an update saying a total of 17 people had died. At least five dozen people were injured in the fire. Now, two survivors have become the first to file a lawsuit after the fire.

according to ABC 7 New YorkThe two survivors, also a couple, are suing the building’s landlord, saying they were aware of “flawed conditions” but had failed to keep up.

In the lawsuit filed on behalf of Rosa Reyes and Felix Martinez, they said they were seriously injured by the fire. They are seeking $1 billion in damages from building owners and managers.

In the lawsuit, survivors also accused landlords of failing to:

  • Make sure the front door of each apartment closes automatically
  • Ensure that the smoke detectors in the subject premises and each apartment in the subject premises are functioning properly
  • Ensure fire exits are in good working order
  • Provides adequate and legal calories
  • keep the alarm going
  • Intercom systems throughout the premises
  • with sprinkler system
  • Ensure that the electrical wiring and systems of the premises are in good working order

The couple also filed a parallel filing in which they sued the city, alleging that the Department of Buildings “did verbal service to safety issues and fire issues and was responsible for the resulting injuries and injuries.”

Responding to ABC 7 New York, the New York City Law Department and Bronx Park Phase II Conservation LLC expressed their heartbreak over the tragedy and acknowledged that an investigation is underway into the incident.

The New York City Department of Justice said: “This tragic incident is being investigated actively. We will review the claims.” While Bronx Park Two Conservation LLC said they are “cooperating fully with the fire department and other agencies as they continue to investigate.” .”
