During the Tolerance and Inclusive Week from Expo 2020 Dubai until November 20, the Swiss Pavilion explores tolerance through the perspective of cultural heritage protection, emphasizing how past heritage can help create a better future.
The Swiss Pavilion collaborated with Swissnex experts from Switzerland and the Middle East to participate in a panel discussion on “Drawing inspiration from the past to create a better future: How to protect cultural heritage and the tolerance of our society?” The panel emphasized Collart’s research-from the University of Lausanne Palmyra project. The project included a digital restoration of the Balshamin Temple in Palmyra, Syria, using materials from the archives of the Swiss archaeologist Paul Collart, who documented the site from the 1930s to the 1960s.
The Swiss Ambassador to the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, His Excellency Massimo Bagy, opened the panel discussion. Mr. Ali Al Shaali, Acting Assistant Deputy Minister for Heritage and Arts of the Ministry of Culture and Youth attended the meeting. The team brought together a series of international experts, including Patrick Michel, a lecturer at the University of Lausanne who introduced the Collart-Palmyra project, Dr. Zaki Aslan, the regional representative of ICCROM Arab countries, and Mr. Valery Freland, the executive director of the project. Professor Grazia Tucci, Director of the ALIPH International Alliance for the Protection of Heritage in Conflict Zones and GECO Laboratory-Geoinformatics for Environmental and Cultural Heritage Protection.
“Our exhibitions and panel discussions on the importance of cultural heritage highlight Switzerland’s commitment to protecting cultural and natural sites of special universal value for future generations and to promote dialogue and tolerance worldwide,” said Swiss Ambassador HE Massimo Baggi.
Before November 20th, visitors can learn about tolerance and inclusiveness exhibition at the Swiss Pavilion, which showcases the Collart-Palmyra project and the Rafisa ICT 4 autism project for vocational education in the ICT field for people on the autism spectrum .
