Abu Dhabi T10: Abu Dhabi T10 League 2022: Organizers of the six-year-old Abu Dhabi T10 league are planning to expand their reach to five different locations around the world. Rajeev Khanna, an IPL veteran who has worked extensively with the Rajasthan Royals and Punjab Kings, joined T Ten Sports Management earlier this year as chief operating officer to oversee the league’s expansion plans. In partnership with Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC), the island nation’s first T10 league has been announced and will take place in June. Organizers are confident of staging one in Zimbabwe in March and two more in Europe and North America in the near future.
“The biggest compliment we got was the first sanction from the SLC, a full member of the ICC. They have approved the coalition and will be part of it. We are also negotiating with Zimbabwe and getting that (deal) done,” Kana told PTI on Saturday.
“When full-fledged members of the ICC support the alliance, it shows that it has strength. In the future, I am sure other boards including BCCI will also consider it.
“We’re also planning a fifth in Europe, Scotland or the Netherlands, and North America,” He says.
T10 Abu Dhabi: T10 league plans to expand to five locations after two full ICC members endorse
The tournament has been sanctioned by the International Cricket Council (ICC), but the world body has yet to consider T10 as a format. However, the ICC has sent its anti-corruption unit to Abu Dhabi for the event.
The world’s leading players have a definite interest in the league. Big names like Kieron Pollard, Moeen Ali, David Miller, Nicholas Pooran, Tim David, Shakib Al Hasan and many more have all played in the Abu Dhabi T10 league here. “There were 1,600 international players signed up for the draft, but we could only select 250.
It shows that there is interest and it gives us more confidence in the future of the league,” Khanna said of the interest in Abu Dhabi.
“We’re not here to compete with the T20 format. T10 can serve as a talent pipeline series for T20. The players like the format because it’s quick and only two weeks (the T20 league is much longer).” Despite the growing interest, Khanna said the alliance faces its own set of challenges.
“The biggest challenge is marketing the product and making it sustainable. Operational challenges also exist because it’s a new format and not everyone knows about it, including gamers.” Finding a window for the planned T10’s five fixtures will also be a challenge, with the international calendar and licensed cricket schedule busier than ever.
The IPL has become a billion dollar product and the BCCI has firmly maintained its exclusivity in the league market.
With that in mind, is there a way to stage T10 in India?
“I recently joined the board and I will be talking to BCCI to see if there is an opportunity and accept it. Who wouldn’t want to have a league in India? We are also in talks with state associations,” Added Khanna. With Indian female athletes allowed to compete in overseas leagues, Khanna hopes they will be able to compete in the inaugural women’s tournament in Sri Lanka in June.
