Witnesses said the explosion occurred in a group of people waiting to enter the airport
A Taliban official told Reuters that an explosion outside Kabul Airport on Thursday killed at least 13 people, including children.
He also said that the explosion injured many Taliban guards.
An American official said that among the wounded were American soldiers, adding that he cited a preliminary report and warned that it might change. He said there were casualties, but he doesn’t know how many people or nationalities there are.
The Pentagon press secretary John Kirby said there was an explosion, and it is not clear whether there were casualties. A Western diplomat in Kabul said earlier that despite warnings of a possible attack, the area outside the airport gate was once again “crowded.” An eyewitness said that several people appeared to have been killed or injured.
“We can confirm an explosion outside Kabul Airport. The current casualties are unclear. We will provide more details when possible,” said Pentagon spokesman John Kirby.
Western countries warned earlier in the day that airports might be attacked in the days when large-scale airlifts were about to end. The suspicion of any attack on the crowd is likely to fall on the Da’esh organization rather than the Taliban, who have deployed at the airport gate to try to control the crowd.
Adam Khan, an Afghan who waited outside the airport, said the explosion occurred in a group of people waiting to enter the airport. Khan said he was standing about 30 meters away. He said that several people appeared to have been killed or injured, including some who lost their body parts.
Earlier in the day, several countries urged people to avoid airports, one of which said there was a threat of suicide bombing. But just a few days before the end of the evacuation work-even a few hours in some countries-it seems that few people have noticed the call.
In the past week, the airport has been some of the hottest images of the chaotic end of America’s longest war and the Taliban takeover, as the flight carrying people took off.
Overnight, the capitals of Western countries warned that the affiliated organizations of the Da’esh organization in Afghanistan might be threatened. The Taliban launched a nationwide blitzkrieg and released prisoners, which may improve the organization’s ranking.
Earlier on Thursday, the British Armed Forces Minister James Heappey told the BBC that the airport had “very, very credibly reported the upcoming attack”, possibly “within a few hours”. The Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Crowe said that Belgium has received information about “the threat of suicide attacks against the masses” from the United States and other countries.
