Taye Diggs struggled with insomnia for 13 years.
The 51-year-old actor revealed that his son Walker (with ex-wife Idina Menzel) began to suffer from sleep disturbances after the birth, which sent him into a vicious cycle of anxiety and restlessness that affected his work, Because he tried to use alcohol to help him doze off at night, energy drinks during the day kept him alert.
He said on the “Everyday Someone” podcast: “This insomnia started when Walker was born. He couldn’t sleep all night, so I didn’t know how many hours I would be awake and then I had to work the next morning. .
“I don’t know how many hours I’m going to sleep, and it’s going to affect my work. I’m going to have anxiety, it’s going to create a cycle, and I’ve never really gotten over it.”
Taye went on to reveal that his attempts to overcome insomnia only made it worse, adding: “I’ll try to do whatever I need to do to stay awake during the day and try to fall asleep and stay asleep, you know, does that mean More wine at night or more energy drinks and Red Bull during the day.
“I can always find little tricks that will get me through.”
It went on for more than a decade before Taye’s 13-year-old son convinced him to seek medical help.
Taye explained, “It wasn’t until recently that my son pulled me aside and said, ‘What’s going on? You have a job, and then it’s time for us to hang out and you’re not really there.’ That made me It was bothering. So I finally went to the doctor.”
He was prescribed medication to help him with insomnia, and Taye has no regrets about eventually seeking help.
The actor added: “It’s okay to ask for help because once I do, I have some options. I wake up between two and five every day and it affects everything, mainly me being with my son. So I took (the drug) and gave it a few days and so far so good. My kid can see the difference in how involved I am with him.”
