Taylor Swift says her new album contains themes of “self-hatred”.
The 32-year-old singer – whose tenth studio album “Midnights” has been the subject of intense speculation about his apparently personal lyrics – explained it was inspired by feelings that surfaced in the early hours of the morning.
She told New Music Daily on Apple Music about the song “Karma” on the record: “So one of the themes of Midnight is how you feel in the middle of the night, which can be intense self-hatred.
“When you wake up late at night and you go through these very polarizing emotions, your brain spirals up — it can spiral down and it can spiral up and you can really feel yourself and ‘karma’ ‘It was written from an angle and it felt really fun and really proud of the way I lived…it felt like it had to be a reward for doing the right thing and it’s a song that I really like because I think we All need some of these moments.
“You know, we can’t blame ourselves all the time. You have to have moments like, ‘You know what karma is, my boyfriend, that’s it’.”
Taylor made a rare public reference to her 31-year-old actor boyfriend Joe Alwyn, who she has been dating since 2006.
Taylor is currently re-recording her earlier recordings due to a feud with 41-year-old music mogul Scooter Braun, so she made “Midnight,” her first original in two years .
This comes after she said she secretly writes songs based on what type of pen she uses.
The singer admitted she was “stupid” with three different types of tunes – written in quill, pen or glitter gel.
She recently said of her creative process: “I’ve never talked about this publicly before because, well, it’s stupid. But I’ve secretly built genre categories for the lyrics I write.
“They’re affectionately named Quill Lyrics, Fountain Pen Lyrics, and Glitter Gel Pen Lyrics.
“It sounds confusing, but I came up with these categories based on the writing implement I imagined in my hand when I was scribbling. I don’t have a quill. Again. I broke it when I was angry.”
