A rare and complex stem cell surgery has saved Kenyan politician Mr Moses Kuria from amputation of both feet, restoring his ability to walk and his zest for life

Kenyan politician Mr Moshe Kuria suffered third-degree burns to his feet, which disrupted his ability to walk. MPs in Kenya’s Gatundu South constituency developed bone infection, known as osteomyelitis, from burns. The damage was so severe that he was in danger of having both feet amputated. After six weeks in a Kenyan hospital, he decided to come to the American Hospital in Dubai.

“I was badly injured, [so] I researched and compared hospitals and found American Hospital in Dubai to be the best when it comes to lower extremity surgery,” said Mr Kuria. “It was the place of choice.

The American Hospital in Dubai is no stranger to Mr. Kuria. “Sixteen years ago, my son was born here, so I have a long connection with it, and I know the hospital and its records,” he said.

Professor Adj Avelina Mario, Plastic, Reconstructive, Cosmetic Surgeon, Burn Specialist, Traumatologist, Microsurgeon and Breast Surgeon, Department of Plastic Surgery, American Hospital, Dubai, performed advanced stem cell surgery on Mr. Kuria. The technology promotes tissue regeneration, in which a variety of components can be used to form three-dimensional cellular structures with the same properties as the target tissue, including stem cell growth and extracellular matrix.

“With liposuction, we obtain adipose tissue to obtain the patient’s stem cells and extracellular matrix,” she explained. “These are mixed with a medically approved gel that has the properties of human skin tissue and its mechanical properties to create a bioink, which is printed in vivo to create dermal patch grafts. These dermal patches were created using a 3D bioprinter Produced and transplanted into areas that need regeneration.”

This is a complicated process because the sole of the foot is a specialized area and it is nearly impossible to recreate similar skin. “This is a cutting-edge research and technology based on stem cells that allows regeneration using the patient’s tissue,” said Adj Professor Avelina Mario. “Many labs are working on these modalities, and we’ve been able to acquire this technology for American Hospital in Dubai to provide our patients with near scar-free tissue healing.”

American Hospital in Dubai held a campaign to promote the role of stem cell surgery in restoring limb health. Adj Professor Avelina Mario is part of this initiative. On Saturday 12 February 2022, 50 people took part in a 3km walk called Keep Fit to Keep Feet at Arabian Ranches to support Mr Kuria’s message to the community about the benefits of stem cell surgery.

Adj Professor Avelina Mario said stem cell therapy combined with expertise in burn and wound care was powerful. “American Hospital Dubai allows us to introduce this cutting-edge technology into the UAE’s healthcare system to improve patient outcomes and help as many patients as possible.”

The two-hour operation cut Mr Kuria’s recovery time to a fraction of his usual time. “We achieved close to 50% closure of large wounds within a week and replaced the same type of skin in terms of quality and biological properties,” said Adj Professor Avelina Mario.

The patient “recovered very well. We are watching his tissue regenerate and he will recover in record time,” she said.

Stem cell surgery changed Mr. Kuria’s life. “It’s been over 40 days [since the surgery] But it seemed like a week for me,” he said. “It was a very good experience; very good doctor, very friendly staff, very good care. “

He applauds American Hospital Dubai’s commitment to personalized treatment, saying: “The surgeons and doctors kept me involved every step of the way, so I felt like a doctor too.”

The accident left Mr. Curia uncertain about his future. “But now I feel good,” he said. “I have the confidence that I can make plans and decide where I am going. There is more certainty in life. I would like to thank Professor Adj Avelina Mario, her team and all the nurses for getting me this far.”
