The 16th Sheikh Zayed Book Awards received the most submissions ever

The Sheikh Zayed Book Prize of the Abu Dhabi Arabic Language Center (ALC), located in the Ministry of Culture and Tourism of Abu Dhabi, has concluded submissions for the 16th edition (2021/22) and received more than 3,000 submissions. It is the largest number of applications submitted in the nine categories of the award since its establishment.

Submissions have been received from 55 countries, of which 20 are Arab countries and 35 are countries in the world. This is a 28% increase from the 2,349 works received last year. The award also records a large number of votes from young writers around the world.

The Reading Subcommittee of the award, led by Dr. Ali bin Tamim, Chairman of the ALC and Secretary-General of the Sheikh Zayed Book Award, also concluded the meeting, submitted the award submission, and evaluated it according to its eligibility and criteria. The committee is composed of Dr. Ali Al Kaabi from the UAE, Dr. Khalil Al Sheikh, Professor of Arabic Language and Literature at Yarmouk University in Jordan, and Sultan Al Amimi, a UAE literary critic and poet, all of whom are members of the SZBA Scientific Committee.

The works submitted to the 16th SZBA included works from three countries that participated in the award for the first time: Bangladesh, Turkmenistan and Uganda. Egypt is at the top of the list of countries of origin for Arab participants, followed by Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Syria, UAE, Morocco and Lebanon. The highest number of submissions in other languages ​​came from the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Canada, Russia, Italy, and Spain.

The award category with the most submissions was “Young Writers”, which accounted for 27% of all nominations in this edition, with a total of 881 items. “Literature” followed closely with 852 nominations (26% of the total). ), “Contributions to National Development”, “Art and Literary Criticism”, “Children’s Literature”, “Arab Culture in Other Languages”, “Translation”, “Publishing and Technology”, and finally “Cultural Individuality” Year’.

There has been a significant increase in the number of entries in the category “Arabic Culture in Other Languages” this year, with a total of 188 entries. The largest application share is in English, followed by French, Russian and German.

It is worth noting that the number of female participants this year has increased to 920, an increase of 76% from 520 women last year. At the same time, 1,974 men submitted entries this year, an increase of 47% from the 1,340 male entrants in the previous edition.

The Sheikh Zayed Book Award recognizes the outstanding achievements of innovators and thinkers in the fields of literature, art and humanities in Arabic and other languages. The award was launched in 2006 to promote Arabic literature and culture and provide new opportunities for Arabic writers. Authors who write Arabic culture and civilization in English, French, German, Italian, Spanish and Russian are also recognized by the award.
