By several metrics, 2022 will be a good year for women in the international film and television industry. UCLA’s annual Hollywood Diversity Report found that the percentage of women in leading roles has nearly doubled over the past decade. Their share of writing credits has more than doubled; the share of female directors has more than tripled (from 4.1% in 2011 to 20.5% in 2020). In the UK, the BBC’s latest Gender Equality Impact Report (March) found that 61% of BBC teams achieved 50% representation of women in their content, up from 35% in 2017. In June, The Walt Disney Company released employee data showing near-accurate pay equity, with women at the company earning 99.4 percent of what men did.
But these impressive strides are also a clear indication of the progress that still needs to be made. The Old Boys Club, made up of industry gatekeepers and executive decision makers, still dominates, especially outside North America.
“The industry has gotten better over the years with more female representation, but there’s always more work to do,” said Banijay Rights CEO Cathy Payne, one of 20 global executives . ECG2022 list of the world’s most powerful women in entertainment. “It’s important to keep investing in the next generation.”
