A car collided with the gates of Downing Street in central London on Thursday, where the prime minister’s residence and offices are located, sparking a swift security response in one of London’s most heavily guarded locations.

The Metropolitan Police said a man was arrested at the scene on Thursday afternoon on suspicion of criminal damage and dangerous driving. No injuries were reported.
It was unclear whether Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was in his office at the time.
Footage posted on social media showed a white car driving straight through the gate at low speed, across Whitehall, the main thoroughfare in London’s government district. Video taken shortly afterward showed the trunk of a car opening against tall metal doors.
It was not immediately clear whether the crash was intentional. Police said they were working to determine the circumstances.

Officials cordoned off Whitehall after the accident but later lifted some barriers.
Downing Street is a narrow street with a row of Georgian houses, including the Prime Minister’s residence at number 10.
The gate was built in 1989 in response to the threat of IRA radicals. Public access to the streets is restricted and gates are always guarded by armed police.
