Korean entertainment establishments have played a major role in the global success of K-pop music. Many of these firms have undergone major transformations over the years, including name changes, rebranding, and mergers with other institutions. Let’s take a closer look at some of the most famous entertainment companies in South Korea.

    HYBE Corporation, formerly known as Big Hit Entertainment founded in 2005, rose to prominence through its collaboration with global superstar BTS. In March 2021, the company changed its name to HYBE Corporation to reflect its broader focus on entertainment and lifestyle platforms.

    JYP Entertainment

      JYP Entertainment has also undergone major changes over the years, but its commitment to making high-quality music remains the same. Originally established in 1997 as Taehong Planning Ltd., the company changed its name to JYP Entertainment in 2001 after founder Park Jin Young. Popular K-pop artists such as Twice, Stray Kids, and 2PM are affiliated with the agency.

      Abyss Corporation

        ABYSS company, formerly known as Blue Entertainment, was established in 2019. On January 13, 2021, the company changed its brand name and changed its name to ABYSS company. In February of the same year, they announced the successful acquisition and merger of MAKEUS Entertainment. ABYSS Company is rapidly emerging as a major player in the K-pop industry.

          Dreamcatcher Company is named after their girl group Dreamcatcher. Formerly known as Pungnyeon Entertainment, the company changed its name to Happyface Entertainment in January 2009. Subsequently, the agency underwent a legal name change in February 2019 and was officially registered as the Dreamcatcher Company to reflect the high priority it places on developing the careers of its artists.

            Cube Entertainment is a Korean entertainment agency founded in 2006 by Hong Seung Sung and Shin Jung Hwa under the name Playcube INC. Later in 2011, it changed its name to Cube Entertainment. Popular K-pop groups such as BTOB, PENTAGON, (G)I-DLE, etc. belong to the company.

              IST Entertainment is a subsidiary of Kakao Entertainment. It was originally established in 2011 as A Cube Entertainment, a subsidiary of Cube Entertainment. In 2016, the company changed its name to Plan A Entertainment and then in 2019 to Play M Entertainment. In 2021, the agency changed its name again to IST Entertainment.

              KAKAOEntertainment

                Kakao Entertainment was founded in 2010 as Podotree. In January 2021, Kakao M and Kakao Page merged to form Kakao Entertainment. The company has several well-known subsidiaries including IST, Starship and EDAM Entertainment, among others.

                  Finally, DSP Media, a subsidiary of RBW, has a long and storied history in the entertainment industry. It was established in 1991 as Dacheng Planning. It has undergone various name changes over the years, including changing its name to DSP Entertainment in 1999. In 2006, it merged with Hoshin Textile Co., Ltd. and changed its name to DSP Enti. Finally, in 2008, it adopted the current name DSP media.

                  Korean entertainment agencies have played a major role in the rise of K-pop music and continue to produce high-quality entertainment for audiences around the world.
