The Greatest Entertainment Innovations of 2022

[ad_1]

Best of What’s New’s entertainment category used to consist primarily of devices used to consume content. But that has changed. While our grand prize winner went to see a big-budget movie this year, you’ll find more and more equipment being used to actually make the content. Self-flying drones, all-encompassing video cameras, and even high-end monitors give people the opportunity to produce their own content, rather than simply consume it. Other items on this list, mainly earbuds, remind us that content is a constant part of our lives. We’ve changed what we consume for entertainment, but not only that, we’ve changed how we interact with it. These gadgets help shape that relationship.

We’re all too used to watching computer-generated action sequences in movies. When the Hulk destroys a scene or aliens attack a city, we know it’s fake.the sequel Top Gun, which came out in May — 36 years after the original — did things differently. Actors trained on real aircraft to climb aboard a Navy F/A-18F Super Hornet, and as they did so, as the jet maneuvered at speeds ranging from about 250 mph to over 400 mph, They experience tremendous gravity. To film it, the studio turned to custom cameras carefully mounted in the cockpit, alongside other aircraft such as L-39 CineJet It was also shot from the air. This method, coupled with the scene of the shooting us navy Theodore Roosevelt and USS Lincoln The aircraft carrier, it all adds up to give the film a rare level of excitement and realism. While the film is still a Hollywood product, uses some CGI, and doubles as a Navy recruiting tool, we still salute its commitment to capturing the thrill and speed of naval aviation.

Samsung Freestyle Projector: An advanced projector that handles its own setup process

Samsung’s Freestyle solves one of our biggest complaints about projectors: that moving them around to find the perfect angle is a pain. The floating tubular all-in-one projector is attached to the frame by a pair of hinges, allowing it to tilt up or down with minimal effort. Freestyle can be rotated 180 degrees so that it points forward for a traditional viewing experience, or placed vertically on the ceiling for gaming. You can use your phone to enable “Smart Calibration,” which adjusts its brightness and color settings based on the color of your walls and the lighting conditions in your room. The Freestyle’s fun form factor and smart setup are complemented by impressive hardware features, such as native 1080p resolution, stereo speakers, and an HDMI port for connecting external devices. There’s also a USB-C port in case you want to connect the Freestyle to a bulk power bank for taking it with you.

Samsung Frame TV Anti-Glare Matte Display: A 4K TV that’s not afraid to brighten up the room

A few years ago, Samsung envisioned a creative way to use a big, bezel-less, high-resolution screen when you weren’t watching videos or playing games: displaying famous artwork on your walls. The problem is with the TV’s LCD panel, which reflects light and makes the old painting look like it’s displayed on the screen instead of the canvas. That changed with the second-generation Frame, which featured an anti-reflective matte display. Despite the technology change, Samsung says you can still see a billion colors on the screen, and it will continue to automatically adjust the color balance based on your brightness preferences. If you can’t justify the cost of the original Rembrandt, Samsung’s new Frame is the next best thing.

Sony’s Linkbuds: Earbuds that mix your audio with the real world

Sony created the LinkBuds to be the antithesis of noise-canceling headphones. They let outside sound in so you don’t need to take them out. The buds have a hardshell body, which means they don’t create a tight seal around your ear, and boast a circular cutout, which Sony calls a split ring. The rings give the LinkBuds their distinctive look and are where the earbud drivers are located. Sound travels from the ring through the buds and into your ears, along with some noise from the outside world. You’ll hear car horns, airplane engines and people on the street. But if you’re a runner who wants to hear vehicles approaching, this is a feature, not a bug.

Bose’s QC II earbuds: Active noise cancellation for all frequencies

Typical noise-cancelling headphones cannot block out mid-frequency sounds between approximately 120Hz and 400Hz. This allows things like voices to occasionally come through. Bose completely reconfigured its noise-canceling algorithm and hardware setup to fill the ANC gap without causing uncomfortable ear pressure or compromising audio quality. The company tunes its noise cancellation and adjusts to the user’s body by measuring how the ringtone bounces off the inside of your ear back to the earbud’s microphone. The attention to detail pays off, as outside noise is greatly reduced even when you’re not listening to music. Bose offers three listening modes by default, but if you want to have active noise cancellation on all the time, or have it softened, you can create custom modes using the company’s app.

DJI’s Ronin 4D: All-in-one cinema gear and Steadicam for creators on a budget

DJI’s Ronin 4D rig looks like something from star wars flick. In fact, it is a full-featured film rig, combining many important filmmaking tools into a compact and extremely stable camera rig. The modular system includes DJI’s flagship Zenmuse camera, which can capture 6K raw video at up to 60 fps or 4K video at up to 120 fps. It also boasts a full-frame sensor and interchangeable camera mounts. The entire imaging rig sits on a 4-axis gimbal that stabilizes footage so reliably that it sometimes looks like it was shot from a trolley or crane. Since the entire system is modular, you can swap out components like the display, storage, battery and audio equipment at any time and customize it to your shooting needs.

Dell’s Alienware AW3423DW QD-OLED Gaming Monitor: The First Gaming Monitor With New Brighter OLED Technology

OLED displays typically offer unparalleled contrast, image quality and color reproduction, but they lack brightness. Quantum dot (or QLED) displays improve illumination, but lose some of the overall image quality found on OLEDs. Enter QD-OLEDs. Like a typical OLED display, each pixel has its own backlight. But the addition of quantum dots adds even more illumination, bringing its total peak brightness to 1,000 lumens while maintaining certified HDR black levels for ludicrous contrast levels. With its 175Hz native refresh rate and blazing-fast 0.1-second response time, you can’t blame this professional-grade gaming monitor if you keep getting caught mid-game.

SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro Headset for Xbox: Gaming Headset for Every Machine

Gaming headsets often require gamers to select a compatible platform at the time of purchase. Some work with both consoles and PCs, but SteelSeries has the hardware needed for its Arctis Nova Pro headset to work with the Xbox, PS5, PC, and even the Nintendo Switch—all with the push of a button. Its secret lies in the GameDAC (short for Digital Audio Converter), which connects to multiple systems and outputs high-resolution certified sound with 360-degree spatial audio from any source you choose. Plush earcups and a flexible strap ensure comfort, even during long multi-platform gaming sessions.

Skydio’s Skydio 2+ Drone: A Drone That Follows Commands or Flies Itself

Drone crashes are bad for your footage and your budget. But the high-end craft avoids obstacles with an advanced system that adjusts more than 500 times per second to prevent disaster. The fisheye lens allows the drone to observe the situation around the aircraft in 360 degrees. A dual-core Nvidia chipset generates a 3D world model with over 1 million data points per second to identify and avoid anything that might get in its way. With all this intelligence, creatives can simply tell the drone to follow them or program complex flight paths, and the Skydio2+ will capture 4K video at 60 fps on its own. The drone also comes with over 18 pre-determined paths and programs, allowing even basic maneuvers to look Mountain Dew-worthy.

Devialet’s Dione Soundbar: True Surround Sound

Most sound bars give buyers the opportunity to expand their audio system and add satellite speakers or at least a subwoofer. Dionysus was different. It’s a completely self-contained system that relies on nine 41mm drivers and eight built-in subwoofers to cover the full range of sound you need, from squealing tires to rumbling explosions. Thanks to the integration of Dolby Atmos, it simulates a true 5.1.2 surround sound system. The sphere in the center of the bar contains a 41mm driver; it swivels to allow the soundbar to realize its spatial audio ambitions, whether it’s sitting on a TV stand or mounted somewhere around the TV. Devialet’s Speaker Active Matching technology monitors the entire array to make sure no single driver is exceeding its optimal operating frequency, and it even has a Dynamic EQ mode to bring up dialogue—so you can finally turn off closed captioning. while still being able to understand what the actors are saying.
