The Indian Institute of Technology Delhi team will visit Abu Dhabi this month to discuss plans for the IIT campus in the UAE

Dharmendra Pradhan, Minister of Education and Skills Development of India, spoke at the event about the future plans of the IIT. “Technology will drive the next phase of growth and development, with information technology and communications technology leading the way. Our IITs should seize this opportunity,” he said.

On February 18 this year, the proposal to set up an IIT campus in the UAE was announced in principle. Since then, the two sides have kept in touch to discuss ways to implement the proposal. The IIT in Delhi had a small team based in Abu Dhabi to develop the implementation of the proposal, where the two-day event was briefed.

Professor V Kamakoti, director of IIT Madras, told local media that IIT’s overseas expansion has entered a “fast track”, with the hope of opening an Abu Dhabi campus within a year, along with campuses in Malaysia and Tanzania.

Only 20% of the students on IIT campuses overseas will be Indians, while the rest of the seats will be reserved for local students, as recommended by the Expert Committee to the IIT Council Standing Committee.

The two-day event, titled IInvenTiv (Innovation in IITs), showcased 75 projects from 23 IITs in India.
